Withers assists Charles Hanson with clearing coercive control and assault allegations

3 March 2025 | Applicable law: England and Wales | 2 minute read

International law firm Withers has represented Charles Hanson, an auctioneer, broadcaster and antiques expert who has appeared on Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip, during proceedings to clear his name of allegations of assault and controlling or coercive behaviour made by his wife, Rebecca Hanson. In a three-week jury trial at Derby Crown Court, Mr Hanson was found not guilty on all counts.

The allegations related to incidents between 2015 and 2023, and Mr Hanson was arrested in June 2023.

Mr Hanson was represented by a UK White Collar Defense and Investigations team led by partner Carl Newman, alongside senior associate Perveen Hill, paralegal Camilla Arpe and trainee Eve Gatenby. Counsel was Sasha Wass KC of 6 King's Bench Walk.

Carl comments: "I am very pleased that we were able to deliver this comprehensive result for Charles, allowing him to clear his name and to return to his successful career. This matter adds to our excellent track record of helping clients to establish their innocence in high stakes investigations and disputes."
