On June 4, 2018, the SEC appointed Valerie Szczepanik as associate director of the Division of Corporate Finance and Senior Advisor for Digital Assets and Innovation.
In this new position, Szczepanik will coordinate SEC's efforts across all divisions regarding the application of U.S. securities laws to digital technologies and assets, including ICOs and cryptocurrencies. Szczepanik stated that promoting "fair, orderly and efficient" markets and protecting main street investors will be the SEC's mission. The SEC's public-facing actions to date have often focused on fraudulent behavior, rather than a consistent approach to regulation.
