President Donald Trump’s order temporarily barring green card seekers from entering the U.S. will exclude spouses and minor children of American citizens, as well as foreign investors, health care workers and people with already approved green cards.
The order, which Trump signed Wednesday, April 22, 2020, will prevent foreigners abroad from moving to the U.S. on a new green card for the next 60 days. Trump said the order will protect U.S. workers who lost their jobs as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, and that the restrictions could later be amended or extended if necessary.
Withers’ Partner, Reaz Jafri commented on the new order, calling the ban “nonsensical,” as most green cards granted abroad are family-based, whereas many foreigners who become U.S. permanent residents through their jobs first worked on temporary work visas and adjust from within the U.S.
