In this article, the recent Second Circuit’s ruling on the destruction of the New York City graffiti space known as 5Pointz noted that a developer willfully violated the Visual Artists Rights Act in 2013 when he whitewashed the Queens "graffiti mecca, is a landmark ruling on a little-used statute aimed at protecting works of art.
She was quoted as saying "There aren't a lot of these cases that are filed, and even fewer go to trial. This really gives plaintiffs a roadmap for future cases, which is a big deal." And goes on to say "There are many different types of art, and people are starting to recognize that a lot of these pieces have value. Whether they're temporary or not, they're important, and this was a huge step forward for graffiti artists."
