Fallon Sherrock, 25, made history on Tuesday by beating Ted Evetts in the first round at the PDC World Championship. Booking herself a place in the second round with a 3-2 victory over Evetts, Sherrock has become the first woman ever to win a match at the event.
Last year's PDC was the first at which two spots (only) for women were guaranteed. To secure one, players had to come out on top of one of two Women's Qualifiers, which are free to enter for all female players (16+) worldwide.
Sherrock is only the fifth woman to play in the PDC, so is part of a trail-blazing group making their mark at the oche.
That said, Darts is still off target as it regards representation of women in the sport. Speaking in the wake of her victory on a breakfast TV show this week, Sherrock reflected that women players still don't get the same recognition as men, lack equal opportunities and face a lot of criticism online. Defiant in the face of such barriers, however, Sherrock is confident that her win has 'proved everyone wrong'.
Alexandra Palace erupted into frenzied celebrations when Sherrock clinched her decisive win and the merry revellers certainly appeared to appreciate the magnitude of the occasion.
Sherrock has said that she will pocket the £7,500 cash prize but auction off the history-making dartboard for the National Autistic Society, a cause she says is close to her heart given her son has autism.
