There have long been research studies and community concerns raised by various sectors in Hong Kong, indicating that forced marriage and domestic violence are real and existing problems and that these issues are experienced differently in ethnic minority communities. While some legal headways are made to resolve the problem, the situation remains challenging given the unique circumstances that arise in the particular context and culture of the community.

In this session, Patricia Ho, Founder of Hong Kong Dignity Institute and Principal Lecturer of Faculty of Law, HKU; Puja Kapai, Associate Professor of Faculty of Law, Convenor of Women’s Studies Research Centre, HKU; Anisha Ramanathan, Partner of Withers Hong Kong family team and Evelyn Tsao, Public Interest Lawyer and Partner of Patricia Ho & Associates will discuss the current situation concerning forced marriages and domestic violence in Hong Kong. They will also share practical tips in terms of protecting one’s rights and safety; the domestic and cohabitation relationships violence ordinance; and organizations and professionals they can reach out to for help, protection and remedy.
